The ISEF competition attracts thousands of students from more than seventy-five countries, regions and territories. Each grand prize winner will receive an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Dallas, Texas, May 14-19. The Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF) announced that West Geauga student Bryn Morgan is a 2023 grand prize winner with his research project “DSLR Photometry and Star Tracking.” Bryn is one of just five winners. Thank you to all of the students and families for their generosity to make the food drive a district-wide success. Lindsey Elementary School expanded their food drive to be a weeklong collection as part of the Lindsey’s Acts of Kindness project. The donations support the Summer Lunch Program for Geauga County families in need. West Geauga participated in the “Now That’s What I’m Talking About” one-day food drive. Thank you to the Westwood PTO for providing each student a copy of the book. Along with daily classroom readings, students enjoyed a themed spirit week relating to friendship. In the adventure, Humphrey learns that friendship can be tricky and uses his problem-solving skills to make a new friend. The main character of the book is Humphrey, who is a classroom pet hamster. Birney, which is part of a 12 book series. The book selected was “Friendship, According to Humphrey” by Betty G. Students in all grade levels at Westwood Elementary School joined together for the annual One School One Book reading. The West Geauga School District will hold a meeting via Zoom at 4:30 p.m. In his Viewpoint column in the May 4 Maple Leaf, Hambden Township resident Sheldon Firem questioned whether the Geauga County Maple Festival might be cursed with predictably unpredictable weather rain, cool, wind, dreary skies and rumors of sunshine. Students are off to a great start with their fundraising. Branch was a great sport being covered in pie. Many students rose to the challenge and Mr. The Band Boosters had a coffee sale fundraiser with an incentive that gave students who sold 20 or more items and opportunity to smash a pie in the face of their band director, Jason Branch. Fundraising opportunities have already begun to help fund the overall cost. The West Geauga High School Marching Band is planning to attend a parade event at Walt Disney World during the 2023-24 school year. A special thank you to guest speakers Chesterland Police Chief Craig Young and Russell Police Chief Tom Swaidner, along with many others behind the scenes and in attendance who helped to make the event a success. The dinner was sponsored by West Geauga Local Schools and The Rotary Club of Chesterland. West Geauga welcomed over 100 attendees for food, friendship and entertainment. The special event is held to honor and appreciate the senior citizens of the West Geauga community for their continued support of the district. The annual Senior Citizens Recognition Dinner returned to West Geauga for the 30th year.
